When do you replace the lens of the eye?

There are two main indications where the natural lens of the eye is replaced with a man-made lens: (1) when the lens becomes cloudy/opaque and develops a cataract; and (2) when the lens is dysfunctional and the patient desires better vision.

The replacement man-made lenses have been implanted in eyes for more than 50 years. The technology of the newest lenses is amazing, and some have the ability to correct focusing problems, spherical aberration, and even address presbyopia. However, nothing is as good as being young and having youthful eyes.

If the patient’s natural lens is cloudy and we replace it with a clear lens, the patient’s vision will naturally be better. At the time of surgery, we can also address the refractive problems such as myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism. We can also implant a premium lens implant that helps the patient see distance as well as near with far less dependence on glasses.
