Los Angeles Multifocal Lens Implants
Lens implant surgery can be performed using one of three techniques: extracapsular surgery, phacoemulsification and its cousin, clear-corneal phacoemulsification. In each vision correction procedure, the lens affected by a cataract is broken up and partially or fully removed and replaced with an implant. These replacements can be monofocal or multifocal, with the latter being by far a more popular option with both patients and surgeons.
The monofocal option does not allow the patient the ability to shift focus the way the human eye can, and thus it usually must be accompanied by glasses to give the patient a full range of vision. However, multifocal alternatives can mimic the eye's ability to focus, giving the patient up to five different focal depths. Advanced lens implants can even compensate for low light.
When to Get Lens Implant Surgery
Usually, doctors recommend that patients undergo lens implant surgery only when cataracts reach the point where they interfere with quality of life. While vision correction procedures are very safe and reliable, being one of the most common operations performed in the United States, they still require significant recovery time. There are also risks involved that patients need to discuss with a qualified and experienced eye surgeon. Prospective patients are advised to seek out a local professional and arrange a consultation session.
