Using laser and ultrasound technologies, the doctor breaks up the cataract and sucks it out through a microscopic tool, taking the eye's damaged natural lens along with it. Then, an implant is put in its place, the incision is sealed, and the patient returns the following day for a post-operative examination. If everything looks good, the patient's vision will start to recover within a couple of days. The surgery itself takes up to 20 minutes to complete, and patients may need to apply drops in the affected eye(s) in the days following the procedure to speed healing and prevent infection.
