Torrance Cataract Surgery

Thanks to improvements in multifocal capability, today's cataract lens implants are capable of restoring clear sight in a continual range of distances and a variety of lighting conditions. Supplanting monofocal lens implants as the standard in cataract correction, they use up to five focus zones to mimic the way the natural human eye is able to zero in on objects in three-dimensional space.

Torrance Patients Can Take Advantage of Improvements in Cataract Lens Implants

Known as multifocal IOLs (intraocular lens implants), they work by reproducing the eye's accommodation ability through double-sided hinge technology that actually leaves them mobile within the eye. This represents a huge breakthrough. Their monofocal counterparts were capable of producing clear vision in the patient in only a single distance range, as their name suggests, and people who have them must compensate for deficient vision in other ranges by wearing eyeglasses or special contact lenses.

During cataract surgery, the part of the eye affected by the spreading condition is removed through a small incision made by a surgeon. Then, a lens implant is inserted to take its place, with sight normalizing after a relatively brief recovery period, reaching its peak within a week or two of surgery. Patients will need to see their surgeon for a post-operative examination, but complications are relatively rare and most cataract sufferers go on to recover vision that's comparable to, if not better than, what they had before.

Serving Torrance and all of Southern California, the Maloney Vision Institute helps patients of all ages recover from a variety of vision deficiencies and enjoy clear sight again, or for the first time. Contact them to arrange a consultation.
