LOS ANGELES, CA—Robert K. Maloney, M.D., the renowned
ophthalmologist and “Extreme Makeover” surgeon, noted
for his clinical research on the latest vision advancements, can
now not only correct vision, but also put the twinkle into your
eye—literally. Eye Jewelry, the latest fashion trend in body
adornments from Europe has come to America for the first time and
exclusively at the Maloney Vision Institute in Los Angeles, California.
“It is far more subtle than body piercing and tattoos,”
said Dr. Robert Maloney. “This was a great opportunity for the
first time where Ophthalmology and Cosmetic Surgery combines for a unique
and fun effect. This procedure is remarkably safe and, unlike tattoos,
it’s removable. The bit of twinkle, which can come in the shape
of glittering half moons, stars or hearts, is primarily visible when the
eye is turned.”
Pioneered by an ophthalmic surgeon in the Netherlands, the tiny pieces
of jewelry are implanted in the mucous membrane of the eye. Under local
anesthetic, a 0.13-inch wide piece of jewelry is inserted on top of the
white part of the eye, known as the sclera. The jewelry is made from
platinum and the 15-minute procedure costs $3,900.
“Using an operating microscope, we implant the jewel into the
conjunctiva—the mucous membrane lining the front of the eyeball—without
doing any harm to the eye,” Dr. Maloney said.
Dr. Maloney is the first surgeon in North America to implant this tiny
jewel into a person’s eye. Eye surgeons at the Netherlands Institute
for Innovative Ocular Surgery report no side effects or complications. The
Rotterdam Institute, which develops new ocular surgical techniques in corneal,
cataract and retinal surgery, developed and patented the jewelry.
