Dr. Robert Maloney is “one of America’s top ten vision correction surgeons.” —Ophthalmology Times Magazine
Seeing near, intermediate and far—with a single lens.
During your cataract surgery, your natural, cloudy lens is removed and replaced with a new, implantable intraocular lens (IOL).
Prior to the development of multifocal intraocular lenses, the goal for IOL surgery was to restore vision for simple tasks like watching a favorite TV show, driving or other distance related tasks. With standard IOLs, it was still necessary to wear glasses or contact lenses for reading or close work, but the improvement in clarity was still vastly superior to dealing with the blurred vision caused by cataracts.
Advances in the technology of IOL have made it possible to give patients the choice of different multifocal IOLs that correct vision at all distances; far, near and everything in between. Where your grandparents had the choices of bifocal or trifocal glasses, today’s multifocal IOLs provide the same vision correction without the maintenance necessary when relying on corrective glasses or contact lenses.
Types of Multifocal Lens Implants Offered in Los Angeles
There are currently three multifocal IOLs that cataract patients can choose from. These are marketed under the names of Tecnis Symfony IOL, Tecnis Multifocal IOL and the AcrySof IQ ReSTOR IOL.
Tecnis Symfony IOL
The Tecnis Symfony IOL is the first in a new category of intraocular lenses that provide a full range of continuous high-quality vision following cataract surgery, while also minimizing the effects of presbyopia by helping people focus on near objects. This highly advanced IOL approved by the FDA in 2016, is designed to allow excellent vision at all distances – near, intermediate and far. With the Tecnis Symfony IOL, there is no worry of choosing one distance for the other. The FDA approval includes a version of the lens for presbyopic patients with astigmatism, the Tecnis Symfony Toric IOL.
Benefits of the Tecnis Symfony IOL
- Seamless, day-to-night vision. Patients could see objects sharply and clearly at near, intermediate and far away distances, and points in between.
- High-quality vision. Not only does the Symfony IOL get rid of the blurriness caused by presbyopia and cataracts, but it also eliminates discolored and distorted vision.
- Low risk of halo and glare. A common symptom of cataracts is seeing halos and glare around lights, especially at night. Even after having cataracts removed, some IOLs can also cause this. The Symfony IOL has an extremely low incidence of halos and glare.
Acrysof IQ ReSTOR IOL
ReSTOR is among the most popular multifocal lens implants in Los Angeles due to their long track record of safety and performance since their approval in 2005. These lenses have a patented design that distributes light at various distances, which optimizes how sharp images are in all light conditions. One of the benefits of ReSTOR multifocal lenses is that Los Angeles night driving is easier on freeways and other fast moving roadways. These lenses enjoy a 93% popularity rate in patients who have stated they would have ReSTOR lenses implanted again if necessary. A standard IOL implant will restore your vision, but it will be limited to a single focal point, and you will need glasses for your daily activities that require near or middle vision.
Multifocal lenses, such as the Tecnis Symfony, Tecnis® Multifocal and ReSTOR lenses, are similar to bifocal or trifocal glasses, and can provide a very wide range of vision after your cataract surgery. Ask one of our Vision Specialists to evaluate your vision challenges so that he can recommend the correct IOL for your unique needs. As one of the top 10 ophthalmologists in America, you can be confident that your vision is in the hands of a caring and skilled physician with thousands of IOL procedures in his experience. Whether you choose Tecnis Symfony, ReSTOR or Tecnis Multifocal lens implants at his Los Angeles clinic, you can rest assured that you will receive one of the best multifocal lens implants available.
Tecnis Multifocal IOL
The Tecnis Multifocal IOL has been approved for use in the United States since 2009. This lens provides vision correction at multiple distances under low, medium and highly lighted conditions. Over 90% of patients with a goal to be independent from glasses or contact lenses report that they have achieved their goal.
